Cash Works

There are some things you can’t do with cash!

Pay the mortgage for instance.  Well, I shouldn’t say that, maybe you can, I’m not sure.  You should probably not buy the house until you can pay for it in cash, something I didn’t do sadly.  People will say, ah, that’s stupid, get the mortgage and you get an interest deduction every year.  To me, that’s a mathematical farce.  Have they looked at how much interest is paid when all is said and done?  I have and it adds up to a whole bunch of Starbucks.

But there’s a lot you can do with cash!

That’s controversial, what I said about the mortgage.  I know people get sensitive about money.  And so I’ll stop there and get back to the topic about paying cash.  Although, it’s also controversial.  I pay cash for everything.  I take out a certain amount of money from the ATM every couple of weeks in cash.  I use the cash for haircuts, food, gas, you name it.

Everyone that knows me, knows I use cash.  And because of that…

Here’s some of the most frequently asked questions I get about using cash

Is it annoying?  Yes, but only for gas.  I pull up to the pump, pull out my phone with a calculator, glance at how much gas costs (in cash per gallon), guesstimate how many gallons I’m shy of a full tank and go inside and prepay.  And what makes matters worse is my car is a real piece of junk.  It’s cruising in around 220,000 miles if I had to guess, but the whole electrical system is about fried.  So guesstimating gas can be difficult when the dash goes in and out.  So yes, that process gets old.  Aside from that, paying for things in cash is great.

Don’t you worry about losing the cash or getting robbed?  No, I don’t worry about getting robbed or losing the cash.  I worry more about losing the plastic in my wallet.

Does your wife do it too?  Yep.  Except for gas, she runs that through plastic.

Why’d you start doing this?  It’s something we did years ago called The Total Money Makeover from Dave Ramsey.  In fact, we just got this in the mail.  It’s his 7 baby steps to financial freedom.  Look at the bottom tip, it’s “Pay Cash!”
